Laryngeal Endoscopy

Category: Laryngeal Endoscopy

Laryngeal endoscopy is a valuable diagnostic procedure used by ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialists to closely examine the larynx, or voice box, and the surrounding structures of the throat. This procedure involves the use of a thin, flexible or rigid endoscope equipped with a light and a high-resolution camera, allowing real-time visualization of the vocal cords, laryngeal tissues, and airway. It is commonly performed to investigate symptoms such as persistent hoarseness, voice changes, throat pain, difficulty swallowing, chronic cough, or a sensation of a lump in the throat. The procedure can detect abnormalities like vocal cord nodules, polyps, inflammation, tumors, infections, or other structural issues. Typically done in an outpatient setting, laryngeal endoscopy is quick, well-tolerated, and often requires only local anesthesia in the form of a throat spray to minimize discomfort. During the examination, the doctor may ask the patient to speak, breathe, or make specific vocal sounds to assess vocal cord movement and function. Laryngeal endoscopy is also crucial for monitoring existing conditions, guiding biopsies, or planning surgical interventions if necessary. Although generally safe, some patients may experience mild throat irritation, gagging, or temporary hoarseness afterward. Overall, it is a precise and essential tool in modern voice and airway care.
